Questions Before
We Get Started?
Here are answers to some of the questions homeowners ask us most often about remodeling, scheduling, materials, warranties, and working with Iron & Oak.
Ask About Your ProjectBEFORE THE PROJECT
Clear Expectations Make Better Projects.
Remodeling comes with a lot of decisions, and every home is a little different.
These answers cover the general way Iron & Oak works, but your proposal and project details will always reflect the actual scope of your home.
What types of projects does Iron & Oak take on?
We focus on interior residential remodeling, including bathrooms, custom showers, kitchens, tile and stone installation, basements, flooring, drywall, finish carpentry, and related renovation work.
Larger projects may involve several of these areas working together as one complete remodel.
What areas do you serve?
We serve homeowners throughout Northeast Ohio, including Greater Cleveland, Akron, Medina, Canton, and surrounding communities.
For the right project, we regularly consider homes within approximately an hour of our home base.
View Our Service Area →Do you provide free estimates?
We begin by learning about the project, location, scope, timeline, and what you are hoping to accomplish.
From there, we determine the appropriate next step, which may include a site visit, final measurements, design discussion, and a detailed proposal.
How far in advance should I contact you?
The earlier the better, especially for full bathroom, kitchen, or basement renovations.
Scheduling depends on project size, material lead times, current workload, and the amount of planning required.
Even if you are still several months away, reaching out early gives us more time to work through layout, selections, and scheduling.
How long does a remodeling project take?
It depends on the scope.
A backsplash or smaller tile project may only require a few days, while a complete bathroom, kitchen, or basement renovation may take several weeks.
Your proposal will include a project-specific estimated timeline based on the work involved.
Learn About Our Process →Will you be working in my home every day?
Iron & Oak is a small, hands-on team. We stay directly involved in the work rather than simply handing the project off to a revolving crew.
Most project work is scheduled Monday through Friday during normal working hours unless another arrangement is made for the specific project.
How do you protect the rest of my home?
Site protection is part of our normal preparation.
Depending on the project, that can include floor protection, doorway protection, dust containment, organized material staging, debris management, and regular cleanup.
Do I need to move out during the remodel?
Usually not.
Most of our clients remain in their homes while remodeling work is taking place.
Larger projects can temporarily affect access to bathrooms, kitchens, or other areas, so we discuss those expectations before work begins.
Who supplies the tile, fixtures, vanity, and other finish materials?
This varies by project.
In many remodels, homeowners select and supply the visible finish items such as tile, vanities, toilets, plumbing fixtures, mirrors, or accessories, while Iron & Oak supplies the construction materials and installation products needed to complete the work.
Your proposal will clearly identify who is responsible for each major material or fixture.
Can you help with material selections and design decisions?
Yes.
We regularly help homeowners think through tile, layout, fixtures, transitions, waterproofing systems, flooring, cabinetry, and other construction-related design decisions.
Our goal is to help make sure the selections work together both visually and technically.
Do you install Wedi shower systems?
Yes. We commonly use Wedi waterproofing systems in custom shower construction when appropriate for the project.
Proper waterproofing is treated as part of the shower build itself, not as an optional upgrade.
Learn About Our Bathroom Remodeling →Do you install large-format tile?
Yes.
Large-format tile can create a clean look with fewer grout lines, but it places greater demands on substrate flatness, layout, handling, coverage, and alignment.
Those requirements are addressed as part of the installation.
Explore Tile & Stone →Can you convert my bathtub into a walk-in shower?
Yes. Tub-to-shower conversions are a common part of our bathroom remodeling work.
Depending on the space, the new shower may include a custom pan, low curb or curbless entry, bench, niches, multiple shower fixtures, and custom glass.
Can you add a bathroom to a basement?
In many cases, yes.
The feasibility depends on the existing plumbing, drainage, layout, ceiling conditions, and other site-specific factors.
We evaluate those conditions as part of planning a basement bathroom or complete lower-level remodel.
Explore Basement Remodeling →What happens if you uncover a problem during demolition?
Remodeling sometimes reveals concealed conditions that could not reasonably be seen before demolition.
If we uncover something that affects the project, we discuss what was found, what needs to be addressed, and how it may affect the scope, cost, or schedule before moving forward with additional work.
How are payments handled?
Payment schedules vary depending on the size and type of project.
Larger remodels are generally divided into progress payments tied to scheduling or project milestones, while some smaller projects may use a simpler deposit and completion structure.
The exact payment schedule is clearly stated in your proposal before work begins.
What warranty does Iron & Oak provide?
Iron & Oak backs qualifying workmanship with our Lifetime Workmanship Warranty.
Manufactured products and materials may also carry separate warranties from their manufacturers.
